Excited to make a return visit to Barfield Elementary! We zoomed during covid, but this will be my first in-person visit. I’m busy making clay kits for the kids.
I’m excited to be working with teachers to explore creating in clay using Papa Fish’s Lullaby as a jumping off place.
Susan Eaddy works in her attic studio in Nashville, US, writing picture book and playing with clay. She was an Art director for fifteen years, has served a judge for Audie Awards for 12 years and has won international 3D illustration awards and a Grammy nomination.
She an author as well as a clay-illustrator. Her clay-illustrated trade books includes "My Love for You is the Sun" by Julian Helund and Paper Fish's "Lullaby" by Patricia Hubbell. Her clay artwork appears regularly in Babybug, Ladybug, Click and Spider Magazine.
In this session, Susan will walk us through the process of her clay illustrations and also to share with us her experiences with an unusual medium for her illustrations.

Poppy’s Best Paper was inspired by the author’s own 4th grade paper. But rejections rolled in when Poppy started life as a blue raccoon made of clay. Join us as we learn about one author/illustrator’s roller coaster path to publication & the results of perseverance.
When should you step back and allow someone else to put pictures to your words? You have worked for years to draw/create the characters in your own text in just the right way. How do you handle it when an editor or agent suggests that someone other than you should illustrate the book you have written? Using the example of Susan Eaddy’s book, Poppy Best Paper, we explore this scenario in detail. This session will give writers and illustrators a glimpse of the editorial process that books undergo prior to publication.
